MOSS ALES #5 and DARTS September 25 ALES, Saturday - Sunday September 24-25, 2016
A great weather weekend for a couple of ALES soaring contests! 16 pilots on Saturday with light North - North East winds, overcast skies and light lift. Sunday saw 10 pilots with an equally nice day, light mostly East winds with clouless blue skies and lots of big lift.

MOSS Jim Clark Memorial Summer Solstice after 6:00 PM Contest - Saturday June 18, 2016
Last night we held the Jim Clark Memorial after 6:00 PM Contest at O.W.W. Seven pilots with two winches and a high start competed to see who could fly the longest after 6:00 P.M. We added up the three best flights of each contestant. Joe Mekina and his AVA handily won the contest with a combined score of over 42 minutes. Congratulations Joe! I would like to thank Larry, Carrie, J.D, Jay and Bill for shagging chutes and keeping winches ready for everyone. I don't think anyone waited very long for an available winch. Also, thank you Tom Nagel. I understand you are the genesis of this contest. I had fun. Todd Anderson, CD

MOSS ALES #3 and DARTS June 12 ALES, Saturday - Sunday June 11-12, 2016
After MOSS ALES #2 was weathered out last month, MOSS ALES #3 and the DARTS June 12 ALES contests came off without a hitch at the DARTS field in Fairborn, OH. On both days, 16 pilots enjoyed the near record high temps with brisk winds. Despite the high winds the days were very flyable and a good time was had by all.

Seen at Area 51 on Monday May 16, 2016
First time out of Bill Hoelcher's Skunk Works was yet another sub-SUAS class ALES machine
This model is incredible!
Not only is it under the FAA limit of 250 grams (8.82 ounces) for SUASs, it sports a 72 inch wingspan and carbon fiber tail-boom. It's direct drive brushless motor pulls it with authority and easily makes altitude in well under 30 seconds. Spotters who seen it fly were heard saying things like: "that is not fair", "it should be declared illegal" and "I think we need to process the model to make sure it is under the weight limit". Just kidding Bill, but it does fly great and goes up in the slightest thermal. Nice sailplane Bill!

Thermal flying at Havener Park, Sunday March 12, 2016
The day began at 9:00 with super smooth air, a great time to float around. As the day progressed, the temperatures rose into the upper 60's to low 70's and the thermals began to pop. With the light and variable winds that prevailed all day, it felt almost like summertime.
There was much "stupid" air, meaning it was easy to find, and stay in it, consequently, there were lots of long thermal flights. As the day progressed, some high altitude clouds rolled in and provided good viability.
As Gil put it: "Wish we could get this kind of weather for a ALES contest".
Joe - Classic Ava, Jay - Pulsar 3.2 ?, Gil Electra 2
Tod - Organic 2.5 ?, Carey - old Yellow Bird, Skye - Aspire ?

Thermal flying at Havener Park, Sunday March 06, 2016
Temperatures were in the upper 30's around 1:00 PM, then they rose slightly to the lower 40's when the sun finally broke through, mild southerly winds prevailed. .
Havener Park Layout: we fly near fields 4-6 depending on the wind directions. Gil and Joe were the only ones to show with sailplanes, but a good time was had by all.

2014 MOSS ALES #1 These are the contestants who at the end of the day still had there airplanes together and chose to have there picture taken.  Lesson learned: take the group picture at the Pilot's meeting when everyone is there and have their models assembled!  Left to right: Greg Bell, Don Fleming, Jerry Shape, Gilbert Perez, Gavin Trussell (hiding behind his hand launch glider wing), Joe Mekina (kneeling), Bill Hoelcher, Don Harris, Jay Watkins and Skye Malcom

Slope Flying at Buena Vista, Sunday April 14, 2013 The surf was up with winds out of the correct direction at 20-25 mph and steady.  Pictured left to right are Tom Nagel, Jim Van Dyke, Joe Mekina (kneeling), Al Schmidt and Don Harris.  Carey also showed up but without anything to fly.  Before we started flying we all (including Carey) cleared the winter's brush growth.  It is amazing what we did in the hour, it really helped and the slope is now in great shape.. Flying wings were the model of the day and all enjoyed the swift warm winds that were blowing.
