This was Day 2 of the joint MOSS / DARTS ALES September weekend at the DARTS field. Dave Wrinkle stepped up to direct the event in much the same fashion as the previous MOSS event the day before. Pretty much the same cast of volunteers: Dave Wrinkle, Norm Poti, Jay Watkins, Gil Perez, Mark.Groves and launch meister Al Schmidt. Also a special thanks to Mike Brinson who used to work with me and gotten back into modeling flying electric powered sailplanes. Mike helped me out by timeing, spotting air and handling of my airplane all day long. Thanks guys!

Another great day for flying, light winds out of the East which became light and variable as thermals came through. The best way to describe the conditions were that the cloudless blue sky provide for very large broad thermals, often seemingly stretching across the entire field. What a glorious day for soaring!

Dave Wrinkle called for a 7 minute max, a good choice as only 1 of the 10 pilots made time. One of them was Gil who ended up in 2nd place one of factors being his winning of his flight group in round 1 while putting distance between him and others in his group. Others in the other flight groups came close but in general dropped 30 plus. seconds.

The max for round 2 was also set at 7 minutes with only 5 of the 10 pilots making time.

As the day was beginning to heat up, the lift was becoming easier to find and stay in, so Dave called for 9 minute maxes. no one in the first off flight group made the time, however 6 out of 7 of the later flight groups made time, that is 6 of 10 for round 3

Round 4 and 5 were also 9 minute maxes, both saw 6 of 10 making time, spread out between the flight groups.

Again, Gordy Stahl flew excellent, this time almost perfect flight scores of 1000.00, 995.24, 996.29, 1000.00 and 996.67. Gordy only missed making time in the first tough round, but he won his flight group in time with a flight of 6:30 only 30 sec short of the max. On top of his excellent flight scores, his landing scores were superb, with scores of 50, 50, 50, 50 and 45 for an average of 49.0 points per landing!

A great conclusion to a great soaring weekend!

Don harris commented after the contest something to the effect: "We can remember these days this winter when the conditions are not good for flying and look forward to days like these in 2017."

At this point, I only posted the one group shot by Mike Brinson with his Iphone in order to get this page up in a timely manner. I will pick another set from Gil's digital SLR camera that he posted on Flicker, perhaps do a bit of Photshopping, and the like and put them here on this site for presentation with this contest report.

Here are links to Gil's Flicker pages where all of the raw pictures for both Saturday and Sunday are located. There you can directly view the raw pictures shot with Gil's camera.
