This contest goes back a good many years, all the way back to Tom Nagel who came up with the idea in memory of Jim Clark for which this contest was named.
This contest is one of two "after 6" contests that MOSS runs during the summer when the days are long. This one in particular is held as close to the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, hence part of it's name the "The Summer Solstice".
A solstice happens when the sun's zenith is at its furthest point from the equator. On the June solstice, it reaches its northernmost point and the Earth’s North Pole tilts directly towards the sun, at about 23.4 degrees.
It's also known as the Northern Solstice because it occurs when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere.
The format of this Jim Clark Memorial Summer Solstice Contest is the total of the best 3 sailplane flights after 6:00 PM. Simple and sweet rules, not really any other rules other than the flights must be those of a pure sailplane. No electric launches but winch launched, high starts or hand launches are all OK..
Quite often lift is found after 6:00 PM and there has historically been flights in the one hour range.
Later in the summer, usually in mid-August when the days are still long, MOSS holds "The Hanford" a single best flight "after 6" contest. Similar rules, but only the best flight is scored.
I am told these contests are unique and maybe the only ones of there kind held in the USA.
